TransNow Advanced Institute Program

TransNow supports students' tuition through partnering with government and private industry to provide internships, scholarships, and fellowships to undergraduate and graduate transportation students. Examples of partnering agencies include the Washington State Department of Transportation, DKS Associates, and CH2M Hill. View the Advanced Institute brochure and contact TransNow for application information.

WSDOT Traffic Management Center Internship Program

Within the Advanced Institute program, the WSDOT Traffic Management Center (TMC) internship program provides an excellent opportunity for students wishing to increase their experience in the transportation field. Students intern at the center during the week in addition to attending classes at the UW. Work hours are flexible to meet the needs of class schedules. TransNow awards additional support through tuition scholarships, provided the operating fee is not already paid by other scholarships or grants. For more information about the internship program at the TMC, contact Nick Wilson at wilsonn@wsdot.wa.gov.

One student provided a first-hand perspective of interning at the TMC. Read about his experience here.

Valle Scholarship and Scandinavian Exchange Program

The Valle Scholarship and Scandinavian Exchange Program has a dual mission: (1) To promote and fund the exchange of graduate students between the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington and programs in the Nordic countries; and (2) to support outstanding graduate students in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Architecture and Urban Planning.

ENO Leadership Development Conference

The ENO Leadership Development Conference is an opportunity for students to develop skills that will prepare them to be future leaders in the transportation field. TransNow sponsors one student to attend the annual conference.

During the conference, students meet with top executive branch and congressional officials, industry executives, and non-profit leaders to gain a real-world perspective about drafting, debating, shaping, and determining transportation policy. In addition to learning about transportation policy-making, students have the opportunity to forge professional relationships with their colleagues. ENO students are welcomed into a dynamic network of alumni from past leadership conferences and other Eno professional development programs.

Region X Student Conference

Every fall transportation students from the region gather at one of the regional UTCs for the Region X Student Conference. The conference is an excellent opportunity for students to share their research with peers. Here's what students have to say about attending the 2007 conference.

TransNow will reimburse up to $100 in travel fees to the conference (airline and/or hotel expenses) for transportation students who attend the UW or WSU and are US citizens or permanent residents. Students will need to provide the TransNow office with official receipt(s) of travel. The receipts will be processed by our office and students will receive reimbursement check(s). Please contact us for more information on the requirements.

Annual Transportation Research Board (TRB) Meeting

The Annual TRB Meeting is an information packed program that attracts approximately 10,000 transportation professionals from around the world. The meeting is held in January each year in Washington, D.C. at the Marriott Wardman Park, Omni Shoreham, and Hilton Washington Hotels.

The meeting program covers all transportation modes, with more than 2,800 presentations in 500 sessions addressing topics of interest to all attendees—policy makers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions.

TransNow reimburses a portion of students' travel expenses for attending the conference provided students are US citizens or permanent residents and are the primary presenter/author of a paper accepted for presentation at the meeting.

In addition, TransNow honors the center's Student of the Year by sponsoring full travel costs and awarding $1,000. The Student of the Year is nominated by transportation faculty for excellence in academic achievement and over all contribution to the transportation community. The Student of the Year is officially recognized by CUTC at the awards banquet held in conjunction with the TRB meeting.
